STEM – which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math – is a seriously hot topic in modern education.   • Students in the US are becoming more proficient in STEM. Of the 64 countries that participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in both 2015 and 2018, US students ranked 30th in math (up from 35th in 2015) and 11thin science (up from 17th in 2015) (via U.S. News & World Report)
  • Preschool-age children engage in mathematical thinking at least once in every 30 seconds of free play (U.S. Department of Education)
  • 17% of K-3 classrooms study science “all or most days of the week”. This increases to 35% for grades 4-6 (Horizon Research, Inc)
  • Nationwide, 47% of high schools teach foundational computer science (Code.org Advocacy Coalition)
  • 80% of students say their knowledge of STEM careers increased because of afterschool STEM programs (STEM Ready America)

Careers in STEM Statistics

  • The average annual salary of a STEM workers in the US is around $64,000, 60% higher than the average of $40,000 earned in non-STEM careers (National Science Foundation)
  • STEM occupations are projected to grow 10.8% from 2021 to 2031, compared to 4.9% growth in all other careers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Employment in STEM has grown 79% since 1990, increasing from 9.7m to 17.3m (Pew Research Center)
  • In the next 10 years, it’s estimated that there will be more than 921,300 opening for STEM jobs (SmartAsset)
